What is the Community Fireguard project?
This project is intended to reduce wildfire risk by managing hazardous vegetation and improving the fireguard system near nearby homes, businesses, recreation areas, and other community assets at risk within the Evergreen Park and Dunes area.
If approved and funded, the project will include:
Why is the Community Fireguard project important?
Fallen trees, dry brush and flammable vegetation located near communities pose risks to both recreational users and nearby properties. The Wapiti Dunes continue to pose the greatest wildfire threat to infrastructure within the County.
Building a fireguard was recommended in the 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy for the forested area just south of the Dunes, Dunes 17, and Tamarack Estates.
Additionally, the forested areas spanning across the Dunes and Evergreen Park will be thinned and pruned, as well as an additional fireguard built, to reduce wildfire risk in the area.
When will the work take place?
The expected window for vegetation clearing, thinning, and pruning is winter 2026–2027, from November to March. Timing may change depending on funding, approvals, site conditions, weather, and operational scheduling.
What impacts will it have on the area?
If approved, during the work period, you may see:
What is the 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy?
The 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy builds on the foundation established in 2015 and aligns with current FireSmart principles and provincial wildfire mitigation strategies. This update incorporates the latest wildfire risk assessments, advances in fire behaviour modeling, and new opportunities for collaboration with residents, businesses, and industry partners. The strategy continues to emphasize fuel management, community preparedness, and public education, while also identifying new priority areas and actionable recommendations to further reduce wildfire risk.
