Over ten years ago, the County of Grande Prairie saw the need for a Wildfire Mitigation Strategy to address growing risks from population growth, new development, and the challenges of living near forested crown land. The 2015 strategy, developed with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) and guided by the FireSmart Guidebook for Community Protection (2013), focused on reducing wildfire hazards through fuel reduction, risk mitigation, and public education. Partnerships with AF, local businesses, and private landowners were key in protecting lives, infrastructure, and natural resources.
The 2025 Wildfire Mitigation Strategy builds on these efforts with a stronger focus on prevention, public education, and collaboration. It is designed to help residents, community groups, municipalities, and industry partners take action. Through education, community participation, and ongoing FireSmart™ initiatives, the County aims to equip stakeholders with the tools and knowledge to reduce wildfire risks and protect the community.
