To continue growing in a way that meets the needs of our community, the County of Grande Prairie is reviewing and updating the plans, bylaws, strategies, and guidelines that shape local development.

To do this, we are asking you to help plan your county.

One of the most important plans in the county is the MDP

What is our MDP?

MDP stands for Municipal Development Plan.

It is a legally required document that guides the growth and development of the county.

The MDP is one of many documents that directs how the county changes and grows — making sure it connects to the bigger picture is very important.

It tells us how all of the pieces of our county will come together

Specifically, this plan helps shape the County by indicating where new neighbourhoods, commercial areas and industrial parks are likely to go, and providing guidelines on how these areas should be designed such as providing for parks and trails.

It outlines the requirements for subdividing and developing land.

Indicates what types of land uses will go where.

The plan also accounts for how we will provide for things like roads, schools sites, parks, and other infrastructure and amenities.

And very importantly, our MDP must align with all the other strategies and documents in the county

In short: our MDP is a plan for how the county will approach the coming years, and guides how the community will grow.

With this update, our County’s growth and development can be directed to specific areas which will benefit us all.

Based on the information collected in the first two phases of the Plan Your County initiative, a draft of the revised MDP will be presented

Your feedback is important to developing plans and policies that work for the specific needs and culture of our County.

At upcoming open houses, the County will get input on the draft concepts for the revised MDP.

You can let us know in whatever way you prefer: e-mail, phone call, coming to the County office in-person, mail, or on the project website

The updated MDP will shape our community for generations to come, so it’s important that everyone knows what the MDP is all about and can provide their thoughts to make sure this plan is on the right track and reflects the unique needs of our community.

Once all the feedback is gathered, the policy team goes back to the writing room and uses the feedback you provided to improve the MDP.

Council will look at the improved plan, and decide how to move forward

Together, we can shape the County of Grand Prairie and help it become a thriving community for generations to come.
